It is currently assumed that modulated pain processing by the nervous system, as well as neuroendocrine or genetic factors, are triggers. Myofascial release is a treatment method whose effectiveness in pain relief, sleep, and quality of life was reviewed in a recent systematic review. To achieve myofascial release, sustained pressure is applied with the hands either directly over the restricted tissue or indirectly (away from the restrictive barrier). For those interested in the exact data:A systematic literature search for randomized or non-randomized clinical trials was conducted in relevant databases. Studies in which myofascial release was used alone or in combination with exercise as an intervention were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the “Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0” tool. Results:A total of 6 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The total sample size was 279 participants. The greatest effectiveness of myofascial release was observed in pain relief (measured using the visual analog scale) directly after treatment (-0.81, p < 0.00001) and after 6 months (-0.61, p = 0.0003). Furthermore, significant results were found regarding improvements in sleep quality, as well as anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Moderate evidence was found for the effectiveness of myofascial release on fibromyalgia syndrome, which, however, still needs to be substantiated by high-quality randomized controlled trials with a manual control group (Ughreja et al. 2021).LiteratureUghreja RA, Venkatesan P, Balebail Gopalakrishna D, et al.
