This supplements a review article published in 2016. Positive effects were found for various clinical conditions, which are described in more detail below. For those interested in the specific data:Methods: For this meta-analysis, relevant databases were searched for randomized controlled trials, controlled before/after studies, case-control studies, case reports and series, and observational studies. No distinction was made between the type of treatment (standardized, semi-standardized, or patient-tailored treatment). Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) was applied either alone or in combination with other therapies. Inclusion criteria for sample selection were women with gynecological and obstetric complaints, including pregnancy, labor, infertility, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, and menopause. Additionally, a quality assessment of non-randomized studies was conducted. Results: A total of 35 studies were included in the meta-analysis, with an overall sample size of 2,632 participants. The average age was 28.9 ± 10.5 years. The results suggest that OMT may contribute to pain relief and functional improvement of the back during pregnancy. Two case reports indicated that OMT can be safely used in high-risk twin pregnancies with polyhydramnios and to improve visual acuity after pregnancy. Furthermore, positive effects of OMT were found during childbirth. OMT during the third trimester was able to reduce the likelihood of a high-risk pregnancy. Compression treatment of the fourth ventricle showed no statistically significant differences in the development of high-risk status or preterm birth in an RCT study. A pilot study concluded that osteopathic birth support can help reduce the duration of labor (11.34 hours) compared to general medical care (16.57 hours). Another RCT study examined the efficacy and safety of OMT after childbirth, particularly in the treatment of postpartum lower back pain as well as associated functional limitations and pelvic girdle pain. Four sessions of OMT were conducted, individually tailored to the participants’ needs. No other pain relief treatments were administered. There was a significant improvement in pain intensity (measured on the visual analog scale) as well as functional improvement in the OMT group. Only fatigue was reported as a side effect. Individualized OMT was also able to alleviate pelvic pain, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, and vulvodynia. One study concluded that treatment of Chapman’s points and viscerosomatic reflexes significantly improved polycystic ovary syndrome. Conclusion: The heterogeneity of the included studies did not allow for quantitative analysis of the data, which is why no clinical recommendations could be made. Nevertheless, the results demonstrate the potential of OMT to safely and effectively alleviate gynecological complaints when used as a complementary approach (Ruffini et al. 2022).
