As an explanation, we instinctively point to “stress.” By this, we usually mean psychological stress brought about by our fast-paced times. But what about physical stress? We spend more and more time in front of screens. Restricted posture and a lack of movement definitely lead to physical stress. What we often overlook is that the flickering of screens and, above all, the exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), especially in the form of radio frequency radiation such as mobile communications, WLAN, DECT, and Bluetooth, also represent measurable burdens.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Numerous scientific studies have shown that EMF causes stress in the body (see www.emfdata.org). The human nervous system operates with weak electromagnetic fields (EMF). This makes it potentially susceptible to interference from technical EMF. Persistent disturbances in the nervous system can lead to systemic disorders, such as disruptions of the blood, hormonal, metabolic, muscular, immune, and lymphatic systems. All are influenced by the central nervous system. If there are permanent disturbances, even if they are weak, this can lead to compensations, causing bodily functions to increasingly fall out of sync. These factors can also contribute to people feeling stressed and drained. The European Academy for Environmental Medicine (EUROPAEM) published an EMF guideline on this in 2016 (see EUROPAEM EMF Guideline). From my experience, I can report that many people who are at the end of their tether regain strength and health, experience increased mental clarity and concentration, and see improvements in chronic pain and susceptibility to infection after a massive reduction in daily EMF exposure. The connections between discomfort and EMF usually only become noticeable when daily exposure is significantly reduced. The body needs recovery. Without it, it must compensate for EMF disturbances 24 hours a day, putting the body in a permanent alarm and repair mode. Over the years, the body can thus develop increasing intolerance and sensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMF). It can even reach a point where, from a certain moment, even short exposure within a day can activate this alarm mode for up to another 36-48 hours. In a world of digitalization and internet frenzy, avoiding EMF is difficult, but still possible. The author, Michael Mumm, has lived for many years at home and in the office free of radio frequency radiation and still works mostly digitally. Those who are technically savvy can quickly find simple solutions without radio. However, most people are pure users with little technical and biological understanding. If you count yourself among them, you should seek help. However, there is a lot of half-knowledge in this area. If necessary, commission electrosmog experts who have the necessary expertise, take the issue seriously, and genuinely want to help you. Without a measuring device and/or a true expert, the success of reduction measures remains pure speculation. Hardly anyone actually knows if, how strongly, and how often technical devices emit radiation. Fortunately, there are simple measuring devices that can be used to check this. With a little practice and professional instruction, it is very easy to measure yourself. However, you can already do a lot yourself to protect yourself from EMF.

Here are practical – easy-to-implement – tips for the bedroom and smartphone use.

4 Tips for Bedrooms

Remove all electrical cables and devices at least 50cm from the bed. Even better: unplug all cables, devices, and lamps from sockets before going to bed.

Remove curtains and drapes that can become electrostatically charged.

Avoid computer technology, including mobile phones, in the bedroom.

Switch off all wireless devices located in an adjacent room (next to, above, or below the bedroom). If in doubt, unplug the devices. These include:

Routers (WLAN and DECT)

The base station of cordless phones and corded phones with integrated wireless modules: activate ECO Mode+/FullECO/Radiation-free

Speakers with wireless technology (CAUTION: Some models transmit even when switched off)

Printers

Voice assistants (Alexa, Siri, etc.)

Televisions (CAUTION: Many models also transmit in standby mode)

TV sticks (FireTV, AppleTV, etc.)

Smartwatches

Baby monitors

Tablet PCs

and unfortunately, increasingly

If the premises of one or more neighbors adjoin your bedroom, convince them to switch off their wireless technology there, at least at night. If you want to be on the safe side or if your neighbor is unhelpful, shield the wall, ceiling, and/or floor towards the neighbor. For shielding measures, you should seek professional help.

6 Simple Tips for Using Your Smartphone

CAUTION: Increasingly, wireless modules cannot be reliably switched off via quick settings. It is better to go directly into the settings.

Switch off WLAN. Additionally, if available, disable standby or background scanning in the advanced WLAN settings.

Switch off Bluetooth

Switch off NFC

Switch off mobile data

Switch off automatic device search (usually under “More connection settings”): In this state, you should essentially have a classic mobile phone with which you can make calls and send SMS. In this state, most smartphones only transmit briefly once every few minutes. Unfortunately, phone manufacturers like to invent new continuous transmission functions. For some devices, continuous transmission only ends when you switch on flight mode. This switches off all wireless connections and turns your smartphone into a small media computer.

It is advantageous to have as many apps as possible with offline functionality. This way, you can use your smartphone in many ways without any radiation once you have activated flight mode.

Further practical tips and expert help can be found, among others, at www.strahlend-gesund.de/tipp and www.diagnose-funk.org/ratgeber.

Physical Stress We live in a time of exhaustion, burnout, immune deficiencies, and chronic tension, which often lead to pain.
