A systematic review by Lanaro et al. (2017) found that osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) reduced length of hospital stay and lowered treatment costs compared with alternative treatment groups. The review included 5 studies with a total of 1,306 infants. Hospital stay was reduced by a significant 2.71 days through osteopathic manipulative intervention. The study concludes that osteopathic medicine provides significant benefits in neonatology. <\/p>\n
Methods:<\/strong> Outcomes were the mean difference in length of stay and costs between the osteopathy group and the alternative treatment group. A comprehensive literature search of (quasi-)randomized controlled trials was conducted from the journal\u2019s inception through May 2015. Eligible studies had to involve preterm infants treated directly in the crib or bed, and the manipulative treatment had to be performed by osteopaths. A rigorous, Cochrane-like method was used for screening and selecting studies, assessing risk of bias, and reporting data. A fixed-effect meta-analysis was performed to synthesize the data. Results:<\/strong> Five studies involving 1,306 infants met our inclusion criteria. Although heterogeneity was moderate (I = 61%, P = 0.03), the meta-analysis of all five studies showed that preterm infants treated with osteopathic manipulative techniques had a significant reduction in clinical length of stay of 2.71 days (95% CI -3.99, -1.43; P < 0.001). With regard to costs, the meta-analysis showed a reduction in the OMT group (-1,545.66 & OV 0556; -1,888.03 & OV 0556; -1,203.29 & OV 0556; P < 0.0001).
