The results show significant success compared with manual therapy. A statistically significant to highly significant improvement in the measurement parameters pain, mouth opening, and reduction of pressure pain sensitivity of the masticatory and jaw muscles was achieved through osteopathic treatment. In addition, patients’ bodily pain, health perception, and vitality were improved.

If you are interested in the exact data:

Methods: A randomized clinical controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with 62 participants (both sexes) aged between 18 and 58 years. The measurement parameters used were pain (VAS measurement), mouth opening (SKD measurement), pressure pain sensitivity of the muscle points of the m. pterygoideus lateralis, m. temporalis, m. masseter, m. digastricus venter anterior, and m. sternocleidomastoideus on the right and left sides of the body (algometer), and the SF-36 health questionnaire. Inclusion criteria were a clearly established diagnosis of TMD by the treating dentist. Excluded were participants with dentitio difficilis, trigeminal neuralgia, maxillary sinusitis, otitis, pulpitis, severe dysgnathia, and temporomandibular joint trauma. One group of participants received osteopathic treatment once weekly over a period of 4 weeks; the second group received manual therapy over the same period; and the control group remained untreated but was measured once weekly over the same period. Before the first and after the last treatment, patients had to complete the SF-36 health questionnaire. Six weeks after the last treatment, a follow-up appointment took place at which all participant groups were measured again and completed the SF-36 questionnaire for the third time. No treatment took place at that time. Results: Compared with the manual therapy intervention group and the control group, osteopathic treatment resulted in a statistically significant to highly significant improvement in the measurement parameters pain, mouth opening, and reduction of pressure pain sensitivity of the masticatory and jaw muscles. The result for subjectively perceived quality of life was not clear. There were significant results in 4 categories (bodily pain, health perception, vitality, physical component summary), while in six categories (physical functioning, role physical, social functioning, role emotional, mental well-being, mental component summary) the results were not significant. Kuhn I.
