The mean contributions to head amplitude movement were respiratory 88 mm, third rhythm 58 mm, and arterial pulsation 13 mm. The rate of the third rhythm measured in this study is comparable to palpations that simultaneously measure Traube-Hering-Mayer oscillations (Nelson et al. 2006) and to the rate measured in a large palpation study by Sergueef et al. 2011. This third rhythmic movement is believed to originate from a primary respiratory mechanism (PRM). This PRM is particularly expressed at the skull, making it a foundation for craniosacral osteopathy. The primary respiratory mechanism can be measured as the cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI). In a Danish study, measurements of physical movements (respiration, arterial pulse, third mechanism) at the skull were used to attempt to demonstrate the existence of the PRM. For this purpose, 50 healthy subjects were included in the study, in whom cranial oscillations were measured for 42 minutes in a supine resting state. The results show that a continuous third rhythm is present at the skull, which unfolds separately from respiration and arterial pulse. This rhythm, similar to pulse and respiration, is subject to dynamic physiology with an average of 6.16 cycles per minute. Further studies with an objective approach to closer examination of this third rhythm could provide interesting insights for the future regarding clinical practice, physiology, and treatment of the human head.       <\/p>\n<p><em>Fig: Cranial Third Rhythm (Rasmussen and Meulengracht 2021)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The x-axis represents time in seconds, while the y-axis indicates the amplitude of movement in \u00b5m.&nbsp;Real-time recording of rhythmic movements on the head showed a spectrum of 3 to 90 cycles\/minute within 42 min. The measured arterial pulsations ranged from 44 to 78 cycles\/minute. In addition to arterial pulsation, the measurement revealed two other rhythmic movements in all 50 subjects. These appeared in one cluster at 4-7 cycles\/minute and in a somewhat broader cluster at 9-24 cycles\/minute. The latter could be identified as respiration, as the same rhythms can also be observed at the respiratory diaphragm.    &nbsp;&nbsp;The slower rhythm (4-7 cycles\/minute) is a separate third rhythm measured at the head that is distinct from respiratory and arterial movements. This third rhythm expresses itself as a wave approximately midway between maximum and minimum amplitude within a broader wave function. No significant relationship was found between the rate of the third rhythm and respiratory rate or arterial pulsation. In resting individuals, this rhythm occurs at 4.25-7.07 cycles\/minute, yielding a mean value of 6.16 cycles\/minute.
