A case report by Gabriele Rotter and Benno Brinkhaus—published in Complement Med Res 2017—examined a 59-year-old patient with chronic gastritis, a hiatal hernia (part of the stomach is pushed through the diaphragm), and reflux disease (regurgitation of stomach contents). Compared with the ongoing conventional medical therapy, the patient’s subjective sense of illness improved significantly after just one osteopathic treatment. In addition, the hiatal hernia could no longer be detected endoscopically after the treatment!

Methods: A 59-year-old patient with endoscopically diagnosed chronic gastritis, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), and a hiatal hernia reported persistent gastroesophageal reflux despite conventional conservative medical therapy. Osteopathic assessment revealed a functional disorder in the area of the stomach and cardia, involving the associated reflex zones. Results: After one osteopathic treatment as an individualized, findings-based therapy, the symptoms decreased considerably. This case report describes symptom reduction of GERD after osteopathic treatment. In the follow-up endoscopic examination, the initially diagnosed hiatal hernia was no longer present; however, this change in findings could be attributed to different examinersRotter G, Brinkhaus B, Osteopathy for gastroesophageal reflux with hiatal hernia: A case report in accordance with the CARE guideline.
