In this study by Lena van Dreumel (Osteopathie Schule Deutschland), only a single technique was performed instead of a complete osteopathic treatment – and yet, this one technique already shows an improvement in tension headaches. Chronic tension headache is common. Osteopathic treatments have already been shown to be effective for chronic tension headaches. This study demonstrated that four osteopathic treatments using a release technique at the craniocervical junction provide indications of a reduction in pain intensity and pain frequency.

Methodology: The study is a single-arm intervention study. In this study, ten subjects with diagnosed chronic tension headaches were examined for pain intensity and pain frequency using a headache diary. The subjects received four osteopathic treatments over an eight-week treatment period. Results: The results of the intervention group show positive trends regarding pain intensity, pain frequency, and medication intake. Pain intensity in the subjects decreased on the scale from 1.89 (±0.69) to 1.21 (±0.78), and pain frequency decreased from 17.5 days (d) (±7.38) to 13.1 d (±7.81). Medication use also decreased from 3.8 d (± 1.13) to 2 d (± 1.41).
