The Osteopathy Self-Help BookHow osteopathy works and promotes self-healing. With exercises for every day
The latest book by Torsten Liem. The author is well-known and respected for his well-founded professional books; he has also had osteopathy guides/non-fiction books on the market for more than 20 years. What distinguishes this work? Behind each of the seven simple and concise chapter headings, the five osteopathic models are skillfully presented with a wealth of practical content. Already in the foreword, the reader is actively and motivatingly addressed to participate/self-help and introduced to the work of osteopaths using the four principles and five models of osteopathy. In the following five chapters “Posture and Movement,” “Respiratory and Cardiovascular System,” “Metabolism, Immune and Hormonal System,” “Nervous System,” and “Biopsychosocial Adaptations,” well-founded explanations of the interconnections of our organism follow with tips for all systems of the body, the psyche, and many clinical presentations—always concretely structured using the five osteopathic models—this runs like a wonderful thread through the entire book. Through the very easily and comprehensibly described processes and interactions, the necessary understanding and “insight” emerges for the reader to become active themselves. This alone represents an immeasurable potential toward health and self-healing capacity—each of us as therapists knows that this significantly supports our work. As a self-help book, it is “interwoven” with a wealth of well-illustrated exercises for the areas of endurance, interval training, muscle strength tests, stretches, and self-help techniques for lymphatic drainage. I personally find the presentations on the seven natural sitting positions, the four breath openers, and the vowel breathing exercises particularly valuable. So far—so good. What additionally sets this book apart favorably from all other osteopathic publications is that everything written is based on studies: Behind an inconspicuous QR code on page 289 lies immense detailed work by the author. All 871 publications he refers to in the book and the complete literature list can be accessed on his website: 58 pages! Respect! While one initially assumes another osteopathy guide based on the author team and book title, the book succeeds in providing real benefit not “only” for laypeople but especially for us osteopaths. As a non-fiction book, it has certainly earned the status of a professional book, as it mentions interactions that are sometimes not always known even to osteopaths.Kerstin Schmidt, Section EditorMore about the book
