“The potential of osteopathy and psychology lies in the complementarity of the approaches. It is necessary to understand and accept that the mechanical component is always linked to an emotional component and vice versa.” Dino Muzzi has been an osteopath for almost 30 years and has been practicing and teaching ever since. He has developed a specific method for somato-emotional dysfunctions in osteopathy by combining osteopathy and Focusing. On November 20, you can see Dino Muzzi give a presentation at the ONLINE CONFERENCE 2021 of the Osteopathie Schule Deutschland: “Focusing and osteopathy” https://web.cvent.com/event/e52b2684-e9a5-4ef1-9e61-f3eb9bc1f042/summary
Interview with Dino Muzzi by Torsten Liem:
IN WHICH WAY CAN OSTEOPATHY AND PSYCHOLOGY LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM EACH OTHER?The most important is the complementarity of psychology and osteopathy. From my experience of working with psychologists for several years, we have seen this complementarity on several occasions. For my patients who are undergoing treatment and for whom the psychological component is very pronounced, follow-up with a psychologist can potentiate the osteopathic treatment and enable the resolution of certain blockages and accelerate the processing of the mechanical component. Conversely, for patients in follow-up in psychology and where the evolution of the therapy is rather stagnant or on a plateau, the treatment in osteopathy has allowed a return to motion and a faster resolution of the treatments in psychology.WHAT POTENTIAL DO YOU SEE IN PSYCHOLOGY FOR OSTEOPATHY?The potential is, as I said above, a complementarity in the approaches. It is also necessary to understand and accept that the mechanical component is always associated with an emotional component and conversely the emotional component is always associated with a mechanical component. When there is a dysfunction, it is necessary to approach this dysfunction keeping in mind that either the emotional or the mechanical can have a greater importance. If the emotional component is predominant, I think it is necessary to work with psychologists in a complementary way to enable a complete resolution of the dysfunction.WHAT COULD BE SOME CLINICAL RELEVANT OUTCOMES FOR OSTEOPATHS FROM YOUR METHOD IN OSTEOPATHY FOR SOMATO-EMOTIONAL DYSFUNCTION BY COMBINING OSTEOPATHY AND FOCUSING?I worked for several years with a group of psychologists called “Traumatys”. We have followed a multitude of patients suffering from post-traumatic stress and it is clear to me that the importance of the physical engram must be treated to allow a better being in these patients and also, in some cases, the complete resolution of the trauma. The combination of focusing and osteopathy is a very clear and easy way to potentiate our treatments in osteopathy. The change is noticeable directly on the table during treatment. This method makes it possible to bring out the deep meaning of the tension sometimes buried in the unconscious and this without the participation of the patient’s mind or the interpretation of the therapist.
